What is a place-based initiative?

Key Attributes:

  • Grounded & operating in a specific geographic location
  • SMEs are the primary conduit for delivery of objectives & outputs
  • Variety of lead agents, such as community groups, local councils, chambers of commerce or government
  • Aim to address local challenges through greater incidence of responsible business practice

Research objectives

  • To identify a subset of diverse but representative place-based SME initiatives from a larger contemporary national group
  • To define a specific set of categories that typify contemporary national place-based SME initiatives (typologies)
  • To make recommendations to government (at all levels) about the best ways to create, encourage & sustain place-based SME programs
