SMEs in their Supply Chain: the development of the Good Business Register - the National Register of Responsible Business Practice

Background
In early 2009 Ernst & Young began reviewing the sustainable supply chain practices of leading corporates (from the CRI Leaders Network), with a view to providing guidance to SMEs in accessing their supply chains, while also looking to simplify and reduce bureaucratic requirements that might be barriers to entry.

The Centre, through the support of key project collaborators – Ernst & Young, ARIES (Macquarie University), ANZ, EnergyAustralia, Toyota, Westpac, INSTYLE Contract Textiles, ACI, Telstra, CPA Australia, Canvas Group and Lowder Creative – has now developed the Good Business Register.

What is the Good Business Register?

The centrepiece of the SME project is the development of the Good Business Register - an online platform has been created to enable small to medium-size businesses to log into a secure website to build their responsible business practice profile for use in the procurement (supply chain) process.  The Register ‘scaffolding’ has been drawn from the sustainable supply chain management practices of the CRI Leader’s Network, with feedback from SME and procurer focus groups and test driven by both Telstra and CPA Australia.

In addition the Register will allow SMEs to communicate their sustainability credentials to customers, investors and other key stakeholders. The Register's five principles have been 'mapped' to the key international initiatives of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and UN Global Compact (UNGC).

5 Principles of Responsible Business Practice:

1. FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY Operate our business in an economically sustainable manner

2. WORKPLACE Provide a workplace that supports worker and employee wellbeing and inclusiveness
3. SUPPLY CHAIN Promote responsible business practices throughout our supply chain
4. STAKEHOLDERS & COMMUNITY Actively engage with our community and other stakeholders
5. ENVIRONMENT Minimise the impact of our business activities on the environment
