The work at St James in concert with government and business is so critical for SMEs in Australia. I applaud the work done to date and the pathway for future work looks outstanding. I believe that Australia has been relatively quick to adopt elements of an ESG agenda but I am concerned that more needs to be done to support SMEs on this pathway. Of course the current SME project is an excellent start. Unfortunately the 'expectations' of green procurement, for example, have been implemented at a 'policy' level without an SME impact assessment and limited support for SMEs to develop and accommodate more stringent procurement requirements. Work on simplified mechanisms [eg EMAS easy] and enhanced industry/sector collaboration has a long way to go. The Product Roadmaps project being undertaken through St James has the potential to provide a pathway for development along these lines and may provide a blueprint method that could be employed by multiple stakeholder groups [supply chains/sectors/industries]. I think the hard work is trying to bring all the 'new' requirements on SMEs into a 'do-able' framework that does not require each SME to 're-invent' and 're-invest' in each initiative/need.
