The Corporate Responsibility Index (CR Index), licensed in Australia to St James Ethics Centre, is a strategic management tool designed by business for business. With international scope, the CR Index was developed by Business in the Community (UK) in consultation with 80 leading businesses.
The primary aim of the CR Index is to provide a benchmark through a comprehensive, self-assessed measure that helps companies communicate, track and manage corporate responsibility by integrating it within the business model.
It is unique in the Australian marketplace as it is the only voluntary, non-prescriptive, business-led measure of corporate responsibility available.
The CR Index is wide-ranging in that your submission goes through independent third party validators and measures responsible business practice through four main areas of your business:
- corporate responsibility strategy
- how this strategy is implemented
- the management practice of your strategy in regards to the community, environment, marketplace and workplace
- performance in a range of social and environmental impact areas

Using this proven business tool can:
- Help highlight opportunities, challenges and strengths in your corporate responsibility strategy
- Facilitate analysis of your current performance by providing you with a detailed confidential feedback report including benchmarking and gap analysis
- Assist your company in minimising it’s environmental impact and increase benefits to society
- Give your company access to the expertise of PricewaterhouseCoopers through validation process
- Create business efficiency and improve management performance
- Encourage new capital in changing consumer and investment markets
- Build internal capacity and attract, retain and motivate talented staff
- Engage board members and raise awareness of the complete range of corporate responsibility issues across the company
- Enhance your companies reputation through building brand, goodwill and public trust

The CR Index takes place every year and is launched in July. There are many options available to companies including participating at varying levels from public to private, full participation to undertaking specific modules, all of which carry different costs.
To find out more about the Corporate Responsibility Index and how your company can become involved contact St James Ethics Centre on 02 9299 9566. Or visit our website at www.corporate-responsibility.com.au.
The hallmark of excellent performance by a company is not just the results it achieves, but how it achieves them. The CR Index is our independent measure of how we’re going about providing support to our community and minimising our environmental footprint. It pushes us to improve our performance every year. Making the Way Clear - Mapping Reporting Frameworks
St James Ethics Centre and the CRI Leaders Network have completed a series of mapping exercises invoving the CRI Questions, GRI Idications and the UNGC Principles. The maps are available to download here. We welcome your feedback and suggestions on each of the maps through our online discussion forum. It is your feedback, comments and suggestions that will ultimately ensure that these documents are current, relevant and continue to inform responsible business practice.
